A Quintessentially British Limerick

On the joy of summer on our delightful island

They say that summer comes every year
That may be a stretch when it comes to here
I’ll patiently wait
Till a significant date
Says “summer’s done one over on you, dear.”

Though sometimes she surprises us all
With a freak heat staying for the long haul
We splash and we play
All night and all day
Believing our bad luck’s over once and for all.

But the truth is she’s playing a joke
On us poor unsuspecting Brit folk
The next year stays cool
Or rains pool after pool
But at least we’re not living in drought, thank fuck.

Recently I have been struggling to apply myself to essay-writing, although that is my true love. At times like this, limerick-writing always seems to save me — a bit of humour and fun never goes amiss.
