Amazing essay! I understand those sentiments.

I was in south India when the tsunami hit in 2004 and stayed to help with the clean up. People burned their destroyed belongings day after day and the air was thick with the toxic smoke of burning plastic and the dampness that took weeks to evaporate from the earth. We could barely breathe then.
