Even more problematic is that people misinterpret Zionism and have changed the meaning entirely. It can mean many different things and for many Jews is integral to their basic human rights and faith while having no political meaning at all. For some it's about creating abundance for all on infertile land, and for many, it's simply a question of safety.
I think it would be much better if the world stopped using the word Zionism to express their feelings towards Israel, the Israeli government, the actions of the religious extremists, and instead say things for what they are. But by insisting that Zionism means one particular thing - and that which is most wrong with the political situation there - it is in fact disrespectful to Jews.
