Excellent essay, Ali. This notion of “my life is worse than yours” is so prevalent. Everyone’s struggles are valid, but comparison is not. Here in the west, for the most part we have the freedom to choose to focus on what we do have rather than what we don’t. That is a privilege that the self-absorbed self-pitying could really do to understand.
