Fellow (non-religious) Jew here. Yes, members of my family were exterminated in the gas chambers. In school, calling people a "jew" for picking money off the floor was common. My sister punched a boy in the face for doing that and his parents ordered a meeting with the headteacher. He told them my sister was in the right and their son was in the wrong. My dad has always remembered that headteacher with great respect.
