"Free school meal" kids are a thing here in the UK. My town runs holiday programs too, and my daughter told me that the cafe she was working in was providing some of those meals. The owner was referring to the kids that came to pick up their free meals as something super derogatory - "scum" or something similar. I was pretty shocked, especially given that Covid had a a lot to do with putting more families into this demographic. It's been their best option and has helped thousands.
