I absolutely hear you. But I would also be inclined to show them that you are listening and responding. Perhaps this is simply part of the ongoing experimentation - to see what fits comfortably with others rather than to dictate it.
No, I have no personal experience with my own children but I do with their friends. One in particular has an attitude of "don't care". When asked, they say they prefer "he/they" but has no issue at all with the many who still use "she" since they maintain they are genderfluid and anything goes. They have been genderfluid for several years now and I am used to using "they" but many aren't and they are perfectly okay with that.
