I completely agree. I am not religious in any shape or form but I would consider myself deeply spiritual and often question certain Christian beliefs if I feel that Jesus would have never aligned himself to them - which I put down to different interpretations of his teachings, as per the Bible.
I was brought up Jewish and my mother gave me a huge, fat copy of the old testament to read when I was 8 or 9, and I read it all. When my girls were little, I bought a children's bible for them - for educational purposes, but it was always a good way of keeping the Jehovah's Witnesses happy when they would come to the door, even though they had absolutely no hope of converting me.
The problem is misinterpretation. But, as you point out, the Bible has done a lot more good over the centuries than bad.
