I have had times where I had nowhere feasible to go and was trying to run a business. During those times, I used coffee shops for several hours every day. I was really grateful for the kindness of the staff in these coffee shops.

Those were very specific circumstances. Today, there are even more reasons why people may be using coffee shops to work from. I totally hear what you are saying and decided not to get my laptop out one evening when I was killing time while my daughter and friend were in the theatre (and I was their chauffeur) because it felt anti-social. I am glad I didn't, although I still sat and had a coffee while catching up on messages from friends.
