I live just over the hill from the abbey where the alcoholic poison is brewed that seems to be responsible for a huge amount of the alcohol-induced crime in that part of Scotland – Buckfast. If anyone has ever heard of where I live it’s usually associated with drunk Glaswegians or, occasionally, beekeepers, because there’s also a famous Buckfast bee.
Great article. During my gap year, while all my friends had gone to university and were getting drunk several times a week on cheap beer, I had gone to travel in parts of the world where alcohol just wasn’t part of daily life so, when I did return to the U.K. and went to university, I just didn’t have the same gusto for getting rat-arsed like students were apparently supposed to. I just didn’t quite see the point and It was quite liberating, I have to say.
