I think the clap debate will be a long-running one. Here's where I stand: 50 always, except when (a) I think it's not deserving of it, which is rare, (b) when I am doing my editing tasks and time is short, in which case I might stop at 33, and (c) when I feel like trying to stop the claps at a double number - first I try 11, then 22, then 33, then 44. If I hit one, BINGO! If not, I keep going.
