“I’m sorry” is simply a way of showing the other person some humility and being able to take responsibility for the basic fact that your lateness or failure to inform of a change in circumstances has put the other person out. That it’s part of our violent language is nonsense.
I don’t think there’s anything wrong with offering an explanation with it though. As long as you’re not excusing yourself, that explanation can add to a wholesome resolution.
