Interestingly I was watching a debate on this topic today. I actually agree that using “they” for someone who identifies as “he” or “she” is misgendering. I don’t think I would want to work somewhere that requires that customers refer to me as “they”. There is nothing about me that says I identify as anything other than a woman so that’s all I feel is required for someone to know what pronoun to use. And while I am not going to take offence, because it’s kind of pointless to, I don’t think using gender neutral pronouns universally is a progressive move.
