Kristen, I felt everything you shared here. Now I am feeling utterly broken for that mother. So beautifully written.

When I was at school, we had a couple of disabled kids in our class. It was highly unusual at the time but the parents of the first kid to join insisted that they wanted their son to go to a regular school. I think it was more important for the rest of us than the disabled kids, to learn to treat everyone with equal respect. Because we didn't understand this was even a concept before they came to school.
