Marilyn, I am going to outwardly contest this claim that Gypsy is a racial slur. The area I live in has many Gypsy settlers. They call themselves Gypsies. Romany Gypsies, specifically.

There are books they have written, available on Amazon, in which they share how life was for them on the road. Again, the subtitles refer to themselves as Gypsies. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Rabbit-Stew-Penny-Maggie-Smith-Bendell/dp/0349123616

There is also a famous horse fair here in the UK which describes itself as "a gathering of travellers and Gypsies" - https://www.applebyfair.org/about-fair

The word was originally given to them because it was thought they originated from Egypt. This was incorrect but a name they adopted.

Many words are used in a derogatory manner - "Jews" for instance. It was used as an insult for years and yes, it's racist to use it as such. But Jews still call themselves Jews (and I am one so I know).

The word "gypsy" without the capital G has also become a word with positive connotations over the years. And that was exactly why you adopted it. Your intent was pure. And just because some people gave the word a negative association, doesn't mean it should stop anyone from using it with pure intent.

It's up to you what you choose to do but I am just sharing the fact that it isn't black and white.
