Oh so true! I spent my school years (and a couple of my early years) in Oxford - that was home to me, the pubs were the best in the world, and I really hope you got to the May Morning celebrations and a few punting trips under your belt.
My dad is from the north and he says that it's the friendliest place in the world. However, we now live in the South-West and it's way more friendly than the South-East and middle of the country. Everyone talks to everyone here and you can't be in a hurry to go somewhere.
Sadly we Brits do have a very poor image of Americans. Since beginning to work online five years ago, I have met so many astoundingly intelligent Americans and I had no idea! Sorry if that sounds crass but honestly, we have been led to believe that there are none. But yes, we are slightly obsessed with American politics, but they do have an unhealthy influence over the entire globe.
Otherwise, I am not much of a drinker and can't stand to waste a day being hungover (so maybe I am not so British after all), I do walk a lot but there are too many steep hills for me to enjoy cycling around here, and public transport in Devon sucks anyway. But, yay to cycling and walking everywhere in my Oxford days.
Thanks for a fun article. You're always welcome for a cup of tea if you ever decide to check out the South West.
