Oh wow, I know of a similar story, of a child with ADHD who really struggled in (and was totally unsupported by) school, so his parents took him out. They owned an organic egg farm and they gave him responsibilities on the farm, which he was utterly dedicated to. He took great care of the hens, fixed fences, and then would go excavating the land in his spare time. He was one of the smartest kids I'd ever met.
