This reminds me of a sociopathic ex-boyfriend I had. I am vegetarian and he knew that from before we got together. Once we were together, he started accusing me of considering myself superior to him because I am vegetarian and he eats meat. It was totally out of the blue and not triggered by anything I said. For that reason, I am super conscious of what I say when turning down meat. But I am quite happy to say that something sounds gross when it does.
As you say, personal tastes and it's not a personal judgement but an opinion on the food itself. We all have habits and pleasures that others would not want to indulge in. That's the magic of being human - we're all yucky in one way or another.
Glad you wrote this piece, Lisa. It's important to address.
