The other night, I managed to extract myself from my routine and home prison…I mean, cosy abode…to have an evening out with a couple of friends listening to fabulous tunes. And dancing to a good few, too.

It was hit and miss whether I would make it out, as is usually the case. But this time I was determined to make it; never mind having to wait for my son’s friend’s dad to get home from work so I could drop him home, I wouldn’t let a late start stop me.

Despite there almost always being something that seems to get in the way of me having a wide open schedule to be able to zip off into the unknown, some things are just too worth not giving in and staying home.

As I was telling this dad about my hope to get out and why it felt so important, I realised I didn’t really have an answer to that, other than the fact that it took me to a place that was uniquely mine to enjoy — away from family and responsibilities and in a universe of its own. And this really got me thinking about what the real drive behind musical passion is — is it just the music or is it…
