This may not have been quite the adventure I was hankering for

I’ve barely been on Medium recently.

A big “sorry” to my fellow editors for disappearing but my brain shuts down to anything it considers irrelevant when there is a crisis at hand.

And there was a crisis at hand.

One minute, life seemed more relaxed than it had been in a while. I was home from taking my son and three of his classmates for a school-sponsored morning of tennis skills before dropping them back at school. They were in high spirits and I was in high spirits.

My sister was at my house, working remotely — her first day back after a weekend of spending time with loved ones in Ireland and doing a major hike. She’d also had an offer accepted on a house. She too, not surprisingly, was in high spirits.

In a split second, everything can change.

We decided to get the dogs out for a walk. The weather was perfect and they deserved a decent length walk, off their leashes. So we headed out from the house and to a dog-safe path and lane on the edge of town, only five minutes away on foot.
